Lucky Press, LLC: Celebrating 10 Years of Publishing Engaging Books for Thoughtful Readers

Submissions

Between September 1, 2010 and December 15, 2010, Lucky Press will be accepting submissions for 2011. Read our guidelines carefully to make sure your topic fits our company.

Lucky Press will consider nonfiction and fiction in the following categories:

  • Ohio and any state in the Appalachia region(fiction/nonfiction);
  • Women's fiction (excluding those in the "not interested" categories);
  • nonfiction: finding love (note: qualifications to write such a book are of the utmost importance; author should have strong Internet presence);
  • poetry (must have at least 75 poems and be a resident of an Appalachia state);
  • Fiction: Young Adult (for YA not by YA)

We are not interested in:

  • thrillers, horror, science fiction, detective novels. Novels about terrorism, murder, rape, prostitution, the sex-trade, weapons- or drug-trafficking;
  • fiction featuring demons or post-apocolyptic world that will give Editor-in-Chief nightmares;
  • sad divorce tales; incest stories; spouse/child abuse stories
  • political topics (right, left, or in the middle).

Note: If you send a query and it is in one of the "no" categories above, we will not respond to the query at all, so please put your efforts where there is a chance of success for you.

Lucky Press offers authors a traditional royalty on book sales. Authors are expected to help market their books.

If you are interested in contacting Lucky Press about your manuscript, follow these easy steps:

1) Finish your manuscript.

2) Write an excellent cover letter introducing yourself. Let us know if you have sent your manuscript information out to other publishers or to agents.

3) Include in your cover letter a short biography about yourself that tells us why you are uniquely qualified to write this book, any previous publications, your education, where you live and what you are willing/able to do to market your book. See this blog post for more information on the sort of input we need you to provide.If you'd like to fill out the questionnaire and submit it as part of your query package, that would be great and will help your chances of a closer look. Without a biography and an indication of your willingness and ability to market your book (in specific terms), your submission will be passed over. If we are interested in your query, we will request the entire manuscript be mailed to us.

4) After the cover letter, include a 300-500-word synopsis of your book. It is also helpful to include the titles of books that you believe are similar to your book or would appeal to the same sort of readers. Without a synopsis, your submission will be passed over.

EMAIL the above in the body of your message (NO ATTACHMENTS) to "submissions at luckypress dot com". Be sure to write the words "manuscript query" in the subject line, otherwise Outlook Express may send it to our "junk mail" file.[Note,Sending by email is not a guarantee that it is received at our end (especially if you have an AOL or Yahoo email address). We've been in business 10 years and still find this frustrating. If you have concerns that your submission may not have been received, mail a cover letter only with your email address, snail mail address and phone number, bio and synopsis to Lucky Press, LLC, PO Box 754, Athens, OH 45701-0754. If we are interested, we will contact you to request the first or more chapters. Do not send unsolicited chapters/manuscripts/large stuffed envelopes or manuscript boxes by mail or requiring a signature (express mail). This results in our having to wait in line at the post office to retrieve your materials from behind the counter and does not put us in a favorable mood to review your work..

If we are interested, we will respond by email or mail requesting more information. If we are not interested, we will decline by email or mail. We do respond within 2 months of receiving your query. Please do not phone Lucky Press about your submission; this will not help your chances. Your manuscript must sell itself, just like a book on a bookstore shelf must.
